About The Coterie
Caitlyn Sheff spent more than a decade in corporate retail before yoga pulled her in a different direction. She built her teaching career at studios around Charlotte, and when the studio she was working at closed in 2021, she took it as a sign. Over a year of strategy, loan applications, and construction followed before The Coterie opened in January 2023.
The studio sits on Thrift Road in Wesley Heights, a diverse west Charlotte neighborhood that has undergone significant development in recent years. Sheff is a community advocate for the historical significance of the neighborhood, and makes it a mission of her studio to represent, acknowledge, and preserve the ancestral land of the Catawba, Waxhaw, and Sugaree peoples. The Coterie is driven by making yoga part of the community infrastructure instead of an exclusive luxury space for only a segment of the population. Here, wellness is for everyone.
What They Do Best
The Coterie hosts a five-class menu: Peace is their Yin class featuring long holds, full prop support, and no heat. Prana is Vinyasa, seasonally heated to 85°F via infrared panels, with an emphasis on breath-movement connection. Prana Foundations slows Vinyasa down with detailed cueing for newer practitioners or anyone revisiting basics. Peaceful Prana is the bridge format featuring guided meditation, slower standing work, and an extended restorative close. Power is the outlier and an entry point for people who don't identify as ‘yoga students.’ It layers HIIT elements (squats, pushups, jumping jacks, optional weights) over yoga postures, choreographed to music.
The Experience
The space is beautiful and well-maintained. Charcoal gray walls, large mirrors, and a row of oversized windows along one side pull in natural light, making the room feel open. The facility offers two practice rooms, bathrooms, and showers anyone fitting in a class before their workday. The heated offerings have a present but measured intensity that supports movement without being oppressive. Instruction flows with clear, natural cueing and variations are offered throughout for both beginners and more advanced students.
The other students matched the studio's stated values: warm, unpretentious, and quick to help a neighbor. If you’re not someone who practices regularly, the social support will ease any nerves and lend to a sense of belonging.
During summer months, the studio skips heated classes and lets ambient temperature do the work. Post-class, a local partner and matcha vendor waits in the lobby with $5 matcha lemonades that you can sip while browsing the curated merch wall in the lobby.
What Makes Them Special
Infrared Heating: Prana classes are seasonally heated to 85°F using infrared panels rather than conventional forced-air heat systems.
Integrated Teacher Training: The studio runs its own 200-hour yoga teacher training (YTT), feeding instructor development directly into the studio's teaching community.
On-Demand Library: A digital class library extends access beyond the physical studio, an offering not universal among studios at this price point.
Why We Love It
The Coterie was built on the premise that access and accountability are the product. With a founder's commitment to confronting her own privilege, maintaining representation across the teaching staff, and inviting members to hold the studio accountable gives true intention to the studio practice. This shows up in how members interact, how the pricing is made accessible, and how Coterie gives back to the community. For a market full of studios selling transformation as an individual experience, The Coterie is making a case for true community yoga.
