About KK Sweat
When the pandemic hit, Kara Liotta and Kate Hickl had an idea. Between them, they brought over twenty-five years of front-line experience in the NYC boutique fitness scene. Kate went from YogaWorks to SoulCycle to being a founding instructor at Flywheel Sports in 2010; Kara served as VP of Talent Development and Creative Director at Flywheel, leading all content development for the Flybarre program, both in-studio and digital. In March 202, they launched KKSWEAT from their Brooklyn apartment into a fully digital world.
Two years of streaming led to a library of over 500 on-demand workouts leading to their first physical studio in Flatiron between Chelsea and Gramercy. It’s a neighborhood dense with office workers, creatives, and long-term residents all of whom support serious fitness businesses. Flatiron gave them a built-in base of consistent, fitness-literate clientele while the livestream and on-demand continue to extend the studio's reach worldwide.
What They Do Best
KKSWEAT runs three core formats operating under the governing principle of high energy with low impact. Sculpt is a musically driven, dynamic workout that blends functional training movements like squats, lunges, and presses with smaller, zone-focused repetitions for a total body burn. Barre draws from ballet principles with an athletic, high-rep structure with small, precise movements designed to build lean muscle, improve posture, and strengthen the core. Arms & Abs is a targeted sculpt format that works through every upper body and core muscle group: biceps, triceps, shoulders, back, chest, obliques, and both upper and lower abs.
The equipment list is minimal featuring light, medium, and heavy weights, a small exercise ball, looped resistance minibands, and gliders. The programming is more about time under tension than heavy loads, putting emphasis on form cues and specific instruction.
The Experience
The entrance sets the tone with a hot pink neon logo that bathes everything in magenta. Once you’ve put away your things, the studio features high ceilings and mirrors with barres along the wall. Before class starts, there's a social energy to the room of regulars greeting each other and catching up. It creates a pre-class buzz that proves a community exists here.
The class is instructor-led from start to finish with the music doing real structural work. Movements are set to the beat and transitions are cued to the track. People are jumping, sweating, and laughing, often at the same time. The energy is collective; everyone is in it together led by incredible instruction. Form cues come through clearly at high intensity. You leave with muscles worked, heart pumped, and mood better than when you walked in.
What Makes Them Special
Built Online First: KKSWEAT developed its community and over 500 on-demand workouts before opening their physical studio.
Founder-Led Instruction: Both co-founders still teach, bringing the same expertise that built the brand directly to the studio floor on a regular basis.
Intentionally Intimate Space: The second-floor studio format filters out casual foot traffic and reinforces the tight-knit atmosphere that defines the community experience.
Why We Love It
Kara Liotta and Kate Hickl opened founded a fitness program built around community first and then made a space for it. That sequence matters, and you feel it the moment you walk in. The workouts manage to balance low-impact accessibility with demanding strength-work. What started in a Brooklyn apartment on Zoom in 2020 now has clients who have been showing up for over a decade, first on screen, then in studio. That’s real retention, connection, and community-first fitness.
