About Sweat Sanctuary
Sweat Sanctuary started in a garage with just a handful of people. Founder Franny Radeka took her background in public heath, paired it with her hands-on teaching experience, and built the studio’s identity in that space. She tested formats, listened to her regulars, and soon created a sanctuary rooted in empowerment through movement.
Franny moved out of the garage and into a full studio at 40B Archdale Street in downtown Charleston, and as of this year, a second location in Mount Pleasant at 918 Lansing Drive. Downtown Charleston's fitness scene runs hot (literally) from heated yoga to sculpt to spin. Sweat Sanctuary opened intentionally without a heated offering, aligning with the core values of her original practice and following exactly what her regulars were asking for.
What They Do Best
Sweat Sanctuary has two core offerings: wall-mounted Pilates Tower, and mat-based classes. The Pilates Tower class uses classical Pilates sequencing against spring resistance for slower, more controlled reps while the tower resists your movement. Layered on top is Pilates Tower + Ski-Erg + Hero Board, which alternates tower-based strength intervals with ski-erg cardio bursts which comes as a unique offering in Charleston's studio lineup.
On the mat side, Athletic Sculpt runs heavier dumbbells and resistance bands against a beat-driven format, while Classical and Cardio Mixed Mat blend isometric Pilates holds with barre-style pulses targeting glutes, inner thighs, and abs. The low-impact, isometric positions build a deep, localized burn rather than an elevated heart rate. Across every format, the through-line is control: full range before adding load, and no heated room pushing you past what your joints are ready for.
The Experience
The studio isn’t flashy or trendy, instead leaning on well-kept equipment, cleanliness, and simplicity. The first few minutes in the studio, you’ll notice there’s nothing rushed about this space. It’s calm and community-first; the only warmth coming from the chat between members in the unheated space. The warm-up is slow and methodical with the instructor already correcting posture to ensure alignment through the rest of the class. Once the work starts, the pace shifts but the attention to form does not. On the tower, adjustments are made without breaking the room's rhythm. On mat, there’s a slower, more deliberate rep tempo with heavier weights than a typical mat Pilates session.
By the last quarter of class, you can expect to feel the after burn in your arms and legs, but nobody's gasping for air. The intensity lives in the muscle work, not in cardiovascular stimulus. At the end of class, people linger to chat, ask each other how they’re feeling, catch up on plans for the week. It’s part of the culture and identity of the space as a sanctuary.
What Makes Them Special
Ski-erg + tower pairing: The combination of a Pilates Tower and a ski erg in one class format isn't duplicated elsewhere in the local lineup.
Heavier loads on mat: Athletic Sculpt uses dumbbells and bands at weights above what's typical for a barre-adjacent mat class.
Two locations, one membership: A single membership carries full access across the Downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant studios.
Frontline worker pricing: A discounted monthly mat-unlimited rate is available to nurses, firefighters, EMS, teachers, and food and beverage workers, which speaks to Sweat Sanctuary’s values.
Why We Love It
Radeka built Sweat Sanctuary from the garage-up, testing modalities and movement that resonated with the actual people she wanted to help. From that, she was able to identity and target the exact desires of the Charleston community: heavier loads, form work, and no heat. The second location opening this fast is a clear signal that listening to her core demographic is paying off, setting a new standard in the area for intentional movement.
