The Telomere Studio Index: What Actually Predicts Studio Success?

View the Studio Index here

We have been asking this question for ten years. Not as a thought experiment, not as a talking point in a discovery call, but as the animating question behind everything we do at Telomere. What actually predicts studio success? What separates the studios that build something lasting from the ones that struggle to hold on to the clients they work so hard to find? And more specifically: what does a truly exceptional first-visit experience look like, and how much does it matter?

We have been trying to answer that question from every possible angle. As studio owners ourselves, standing at the front desk on a packed Saturday morning, making decisions about pricing and programming and culture with incomplete information and no roadmap. As managers and teachers and passionate studio goers with a high attention to detail and an obsession with understanding what makes a space feel truly exceptional. As consultants who have worked strategically with over 800 studios to turn them around, make them profitable, help them reinvent themselves, build community, and drive sales. Setting up systems, testing marketing strategies, pushing the envelope, leading the way, and paying close attention to what the results are telling us.

The Studio Index is what happens when ten years of that obsession meets a framework rigorous enough to do it justice.

The Michelin Principle

When the Michelin brothers published their first guide in 1900, they weren't offering opinions they were presenting the results of a disciplined, methodical, anonymous study of restaurants conducted against a consistent set of criteria, applied the same way every single time. What made the Michelin Guide authoritative wasn't the prestige of the people behind it; it was the rigour of the process, the consistency of the standard, and the sheer volume of experience that had been gathered, observed, and documented before a single word was written. A Michelin star means something because it is earned through study, not awarded through preference.

Every visit is assessed against the same comprehensive framework, asking the same questions, applying the same standards, regardless of the studio's size, location, modality, or reputation. The goal isn't to be subjective arbiters of taste; it's to be objective, consistent observers of excellence and to document what we find with the same care and discipline we bring to every client engagement.

Ten Years, Thousands of Studios, One Industry

Over the past decade, our team has personally visited thousands of studios across the USA, Canada, the UK, and Europe, in every modality, at every price point, and at every stage of growth. We have accumulated more than 55 years of combined industry experience, partnered closely with over 800 studios across yoga, pilates, barre, Lagree, cycling, bootcamp, boxing, martial arts, dance, and more, and we have been in all of the shoes: the owner, the manager, the teacher, the client. We have walked into studios as anonymous first-time visitors paying attention to every touchpoint, and we have sat across the table from studio owners trying to figure out why their numbers aren't moving the way they should.

That body of knowledge is what gives the Studio Index its authority. We are not reviewing studios because we have opinions about what a good yoga class should feel like. We are reviewing studios because we have spent ten years building the most comprehensive understanding of boutique fitness excellence in the industry, and the time has come to formalise it. The Studio Index is our Tenyear, our tenth anniversary contribution to the industry that has shaped everything we are.

Why the First Visit Is Everything

Every Studio Index evaluation focuses on the first-visit experience, and that choice is entirely deliberate. In the boutique fitness world, the intro offer is simultaneously your most powerful marketing tool, your most important sales conversation, and your single greatest opportunity to demonstrate what your studio is truly about. It is also, in our experience, the area where even excellent studios most consistently leave value on the table. The first visit is not just a class. It is a promise about what membership will feel like, and whether that promise is kept or broken in those first 60 to 90 minutes will determine whether a visitor becomes a member, and whether a member becomes an advocate.

Our evaluators arrive as anonymous first-time clients, experiencing everything a new visitor would: the ease or friction of the booking process, the warmth of the welcome, the physical environment, the quality of instruction, the sense of community in the room, and the thoughtfulness of the follow-up communication that comes afterward. Every touchpoint is assessed across five categories, every interaction noted, and the entire experience is documented through the lens of a consistent framework that allows us to compare meaningfully across hundreds of different studios and draw conclusions grounded in evidence rather than impression.

What the Index Will Reveal

The index is live and growing, with new studios being added regularly throughout the year across the USA, Canada, the UK, and Europe. As the index grows, so too will the insights it generates: what consistently separates studios with exceptional retention from those that struggle to convert their intro offers, what world-class hospitality looks like across different modalities and markets, and the small, specific, repeatable things that the best studios do differently in those critical first few minutes with a new client.

The boutique fitness industry has never been more competitive, and the studios that will thrive are the ones that approach excellence not as a vague aspiration but as a practice: something that can be studied, understood, refined, and built with intention. These are the questions this industry has been asking for years, and the Studio Index will answer them, not with theory, but with the accumulated weight of direct, consistent, carefully documented observation. When studios are better, clients are more loyal, communities are stronger, and the industry that so many of us have dedicated our careers to become something even more extraordinary than it already is.
