About Wabi Sabi Pilates

Founder Kelly Gorder has been in and around Pilates since 2013, when she completed her mat and reformer teacher training while still working her corporate job. She taught on the side, out of her home and in other studios, for years before eventually pivoting fully into her movement career. When she returned to Boulder, she came with a clear intention: build something with purpose, and build it for real people.

Wabi-sabi comes from the Japanese philosophy of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. She chose the name as a direct counterpoint to the performance culture that dominates a lot of fitness, in a city like Boulder where optimization can become an obsession for a lot of the fitness community. Kelly is more focused on how new students feel and the process of imperfection that leads to growth.

The studio itself sits at 4949 Broadway in the same building that anchors the NoBo Art District, a grassroots creative community stretching along North Broadway that's home to over 40 artist studios, galleries, and creative businesses. Wabi Sabi Pilates shares that same artistic energy. The building hosts murals on its Broadway-facing fence, and the NoBo First Friday Artwalk activates the whole corridor every month. A Pilates studio that emphasizes imperfection, process, and showing up fits here in a way it wouldn't on Pearl Street.

What They Do Best

Wabi Sabi runs a tight class menu organized around six formats: Wabi-Align (all-levels foundational work), Wabi-Core (progressive core strength and stability), Wabi-Strong (resistance and weight integration), Wabi-Unwind (mobility and breath-focused), Wabi-Advanced (longer sequences building toward complex exercises), and Wabi-Snow, a seasonal snow sports conditioning series. Each format has a distinct physiological focus, and the progression from Align through Advanced provides a developmental path for members.

Small group equipment classes cap at four people and pull from reformers, towers, Pilates chairs, arcs, and props in varied rotation that keeps the work from going stale. Mat classes bring in foam rollers, bands, and Pilates rings. Kelly also offers Private 1:1 and duo sessions for those who want more individualized programming. The studio was built around classical Pilates principles of breath, core integration, spinal articulation and applies enough modern variation to stay engaging without losing rigor.

The Experience

The intake is thorough for first-timers: injury history, Pilates background, what's been bothering you (in general). This pre-class conversation shapes what happens on your tour of the space and the class itself. Spring setup is demonstrated and assisted, movements are cued clearly, and hands-on adjustments are offered as needed. The small class format means everyone is addressed by name. It’s a grounding part of the experience. The class is challenging, but won’t leave you feeling overworked. Instead, the work accumulates and by the final sequences, you've built enough load through the session that the body is fatigued.

The studio is small and intentionally appointed with warm accents and a fun, colorful aesthetic. When the garage door is open, the air and light change the whole room. The view of the mountains is like communing with nature while you’re on the reformer (or mat), and elevates the connection you feel with your other classmates and the practice itself.

What Makes Them Special

  • Four-person equipment cap: Group classes top out at four, making personalized cues and in-class adjustments actionable and attainable.

  • Snow sports conditioning series: Wabi-Snow is a Pilates-based seasonal program specifically designed for ski and snowboard preparation making it a natural fit for the Boulder market.

  • Tri-certified founder: Kelly holds Balanced Body Comprehensive Pilates certification, NBC-HWC health and wellness coaching credentials, and ICF professional coaching certification making her qualified to work with injuries, chronic pain, and athlete-specific goals.

  • Arts district location with open-air option: A working garage door at the studio front brings in mountain air and light when open, making the physical space distinct from a standard studio build-out.

Why We Love It

Kelly Gorder opened a Pilates studio to create a space that reflects how she thinks movement should feel. The wabi-sabi philosophy is built into the operational logic of every class format and every intake conversation. The decision to keep the studio small when scaling up would have been easier means she gets to work through imperfections of every student for a better outcome overall. For Boulder movers who want serious Pilates instruction without the performance pressure that often comes with it, Wabi Sabi Pilates is the studio for you.
